We have recently partnered with L Davey and Sons Feed Company to provide chelated minerals in all of our products. To give a brief explanation, a chelated mineral is the organic-bound form of a nutrient. These nutrients are bound to amino acids or peptides to prevent the mineral from being tied up by dietary antagonists. The organic-bound form allows the body to absorb these nutrients and utilize them more effectively.
Trace minerals most likely to be tied up are zinc, copper, manganese, cobalt, and selenium. Molecules that will tie these up include molybdenum, iron, and sulphates. Sulphates are a concern in our area due to our water quality. This is a large reason why we are switching all of our products to the chelated form. Getting your water tested is an important step to choosing the correct mineral for your operation.
The simplified mineral wheel below shows the interactions, positive and negative, between minerals and vitamins. Understanding your water quality, feed quality, and this wheel will allow you to select the correct mineral for your operation. Using chelated forms of minerals allows you to ensure the cattle are getting the most out of the product you are supplying. And you are getting your money's worth!
